Summary

Error: "This data has been updated to a new file format and is now incompatible with this version of the software". The error comes up when opening a Sage 50 Accounting file.

Cause

  • Opening the data file in an older or incorrect version / edition of Sage 50
  • Using the wrong Sage 50 icon to open the data file
  • Data corruption issues

Resolution

Use the correct Sage 50 icon to open the data file

  1. On your desktop, right-click the new Sage 50 program icon and select Properties.
  2. Under the General tab, you'll see the Sage 50 version and release.
  3. Double-click the new Sage 50 program icon on the desktop to open the file.
  4. Delete older versions from your desktop.

Update Sage 50

  1. Install the latest update.
  2. Use the updated program icon to open the database.
  3. Delete older versions from your desktop.

An antivirus or firewall interrupted the product update

  1. Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus.
  2. Reinstall the product update.
  3. Open the file again.

The data file is in a higher edition of Sage 50

  1. Upgrade Sage 50 to the right product version (for example, Sage 50 Pro to Sage 50 Premium).
  2. Use the upgraded program to open the database.
  3. If an accountant accidentally upgraded the file, restore from a backup from before the upgrade.

The data is in the most recent version but the error still comes up

  1. Restore from the most recent backup.
  2. Contact Sage support at 1-888-522-2722 if you're still getting the error message.
