Error: "Unable to backup company file..."

Summary

How to resolve the error: "Unable to backup company file; one or more files are in read only state" when creating a backup in Sage 50 Accounting.

Resolution

Run Sage as Administrator

  1. Right-click on the Sage 50 icon
  2. Click Run as Administrator
  3. Verify the read only errors are gone

Move the backup

  1. Go to File, Backup
  2. Under the File Name section, enter a new name
  3. Under the Location section, click on the Browse button
  4. Change file location to a new folder under the C: drive
  5. Click OK to confirm the location
  6. Click OK again to proceed with the backup creation
