Summary

How to resolve the error: "The file cannot be restored to the selected directory because you do not have the rights for this directory." when restoring from backup in Sage 50 Accounting.

Cause

  • A Sage 50 backup contains the location where the data file was originally saved
  • Restore attempt to a restricted location
  • User Account Control (UAC) is enabled

Resolution

Run Sage 50 as administrator

  1. Run as administrator.

I’m restoring to C:\Program files\ (or C:\Program files (x86)\)

  1. Enter the name of the new file. Click Browse.
  2. Create a folder in 'C:\MySagedata\'.
  3. Browse to this folder. 
  4. Relabel the filename 'NEW' to a more descriptive filename.
  5. Click Save.
  6. If asked to replace an existing company file, click No and replace the name.
  7. Click Finish.

I’m restoring to C:\Users\[usernameX]\ but usernameX doesn’t exist on this PC

  1. Enter the name of the new file. Click Browse.
  2. Create a folder in 'C:\MySagedata\'.
  3. Browse into this folder.
  4. Relabel the filename 'NEW' to a more descriptive filename.
  5. Click Save.
  6. If asked to replace an existing company file, click No and replace the name.
  7. Click Finish.

I’m restoring elsewhere on the network

  1. Contact your network administrator to get this resolved.
