CSV Import Fails for Customers with French (Canada) Regional Settings

Created on  | Last modified on

Summary

I am a French speaking customer in Canada trying to import my Customers, Vendors, Products, and Services in Sage Accounting. I downloaded the import template for Customers and filled in my information. However, the import fails even though I am following the provided template. When viewing the CSV template in Excel, all data appears squeezed together in Column A rather than each field occupying its own column.

Cause

Customers with French (Canada) Regional Settings on their computers use semi-colons as their list separator. Customers with English (Canada) Regional Settings use commas as their list separator. The Sage Accounting import process is designed for customers using commas as the list separator.

Resolution

Customers with French (Canada) Regional Settings can reformat the CSV template file after download using the following steps:

  • Open the downloaded CSV template in Excel
  • Highlight Column A
  • Click the Data tab
  • Click Text to Columns
  • Select the radio button next to Delimited
  • Click Next
  • Check Semi-colon under Delimiters
  • Verify that no other Delimiters are selected
  • Click Next
  • Click Finish

The file should now appear in the correct format with each field occupying one column. Customers can fill in their data on the corrected CSV template and import successfully.
